Recently, followers of Regular Sundays joined another edition of the monthly event. This time to hear from Inkosi Unathi who creates visuals ranging from pencil drawings, canvas paintings, murals and clay sculptures to digital work like illustration work, and 2D & 3D animation. Born and raised in a culturally diverse part of Johannesburg, South Africa, most of his inspiration comes from his experiences within the environments he’s exposed to.

At the fitting space of Best Friends in Greenside, guests had the opportunity to watch him complete his latest piece inspired by the influences that come into play when creating in the modern-day world. It was later through conversation that guests found out more about what inspires him and the work he produces.

Speaking about the completion of his work, Inkosi Unathi mentions that he sees his latest work as a representation of how we’re all vessels with different ways of understanding the world around us and that through our uniqueness we’re able to come up with different ideas. The meaning and inspiration behind his piece also makes reference to his latest readings which explore the age-old understanding of how masks and clay pots are vessels for spirits which take up a physical form in the physical realm. Therefore, the piece extends itself further into representing him and how he chooses to express his creativity in the physical through methods and techniques which resonate with him – as through the medium of the spray can he is able to go out there and deliver whatever message he wants to convey.
