Established in 2018 in Braamfontein Johannesburg – initially with plans of being a Thrift store -Mo Piiercings was formed and went on to find a spot in the hearts of many of its loyal consumers and brand friends.
One might argue that although Moagi Mengo – affectionately known as Mo – might be considered as the founder of the street culture driven body art store; it is actually the business that found him. The young creative who has surrounded himself with entrepreneurial creatives; initially had aspirations of juggling a successful fashion forward thrift store in the suitable location of Braamfontein while following his aspirations of being a stylist and creative director. Little did he know that he’d eventually call Braamfontein home. Bringing together deliberately destructive creatives who are currently changing how we experience our manicure, tooth gems, tattoo art, permanent and personalised jewelry as well as thrifting and local fashion consumer journeys.
From the moment you walk into a Johannesburg or Pretoria based Mo Piiercings studio, you almost forget that you’re in for a particular service. Rather you’re met by interesting individuals who are keen on assisting you and go as far as making you feel comfortable that you begin to think that you might be in the comfort of your own home. A customer service feeling that captured Mo and encouraged him to embark on the journey his business has placed him on.
“Since I was already in the retail and customer service industry, my love for interacting with consumers and going above and beyond their expectations made the business transition easy”, highlights Mo. He even goes on to mention that helping people overcome their fear and preconceived notions and stigmas associated with the body art is a priority to him and the team. His love and patience that we see in his relationship with his business and consumers is also something that has extended to his relationship with his team. In speaking on those who have tirelessly contributed to what the brand is today, Mo mentions that he is a firm believer in energy and other people’s potential to be great at their craft. Further elaborating that , “the collective of entrepreneurs and creatives that we work with in the store, were individually picked by members of the team based on their work, social impact as well as their contribution to their industry”

The studio boasts a wide range of creative talent who we as the public have also become familiar with. It’s hard to miss the impact that manicure master Sista Ntwembu and the firm favourite fashion brand Uncle Scotty have made on our street culture. Making it easy to understand how Mo Piiercings, which started in Johannesburg is now also making waves just outside of our borders. Brand loyalists from countries such as Botswana, Namibia, Swaziland, and Lesotho as well as countries reaching as far as Nigeria and Ghana have also asked about the possibilities of the team visiting their shores for their own unique Mo Piiercings experience. Also further reassuring our South African market that the future of South African body art studios is certainly in safe hands.
