We had a chat with Marco and he took us into his music process and the story behind his song, “Complicated”.
Marco De Vil, how would you describe your music style and the themes you explore in your music?
[MARCO DE VIL]: I believe my music is quite simple yet deeply self-explanatory. I’d say my style or theme of music ties into sadness, pain & dealing with or overcoming that pain. The main inspiration comes from love lost and old wounds that still haven’t healed. A very nostalgic sound – that teleports the listener into his or her past, reliving critical and pivotal moments in his or her life. A therapy session with just yourself.
How has your music resonated with listeners and what kind of impact has it had on them?
[MARCO DE VIL]: Though I’m in South Africa, my music has hit hearts and minds all around the world, when I released Drugs & Suicide 2 years ago, I started receiving messages from people in Russia telling me how much they love and resonate with the song, this showed me how universal music is and how much of an impact my song has had in places I’ve never been. Close to home my supporters truly felt touched and told me they felt the song was made for them..and truthfully it was, it is for us. From crying to dealing & overcoming negative thoughts of suicide – I truly feel I’ve found a way to allow the listener to vent like I have without being explosive or destructive, but rather emotional in their expression
What was the inspiration behind the single “Don’t Want You Back”?
[MARCO DE VIL]: Love lost. I made this song with my team with one thing in mind. An anthem for every heartbroken person out there looking to let go for good. Its an angered spill but also needed for one to move on with no attachments. I felt that the subtle anger expressed in the song would allow for the listener to finally give it up and move on for his or her best self. That was me.. and I had to do what was best for me and for that person, otherwise we would have an endless loop
Tell us about your music management deal with Plus Two Seven Management and what it means for you as an artist?
[MARCO DE VIL]: My signing with Plus Two Seven is probably the greatest thing to ever happen to me. I mean I dreamt about this for as long as I can remember, and to have the supportive and creative powerhouse of a team I have is a blessing that I’m really lucky and honored to receive. It feels like family, I get all the guidance and help I need. I’m from Cape Town, and I know many artists that feel they have to go to the US or elsewhere to make it or get signed, but I will tell you one thing, utilize your social skills because they are definitely out there and you never know who’s watching.
Unpack the single “Complicated” for us – who you worked with, cover inspirations, and more.
[MARCO DE VIL]: “Complicated” has been in the vault for 3 years, and is one of my most personal favorites to date. I made this song on the first weekend of being scouted, with my Manager Quidd Dunn & Jerelle Jules. This was after a very intense and close breakup that left me with so much pain and bottled emotion, which served as a catalyst for the making and process of “Complicated” and a few other songs. The artwork was something I worked very closely on like I do with all my artwork. It’s basically a representation of Leonardo Da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man but with my own spin to it. The double figure is the dynamic of the good and the bad in one (referring to the Gemini zodiac) my star sign – the stereotype of being half-half, two-faced, Yin and Yang, etc.
The falling winged figure is the representation of me feeling exiled to this life, feeling like I don’t deserve to be here. I felt like at some point in time we all feel that “why” creep up on us, why are we here ? What is the meaning behind all of this? The fetus symbolizes the process of rebirth over and over. Being someone that also is believer in reincarnation I feel like I’m ever-changing and evolving – each time born again coming back different in newer forms with newer knowledge, wisdom, personalities, and traits
The eye – The eye of Providence, God’s eye watching over me, but he’s in tears for the pain he’s put me through. This depiction is tied into moments when we feel like passing the blame or our misjudgments on to others, in my case God. I remember countless times, alone in tears raging and directing my hate towards God for the things that were happening in my life, so this depiction was just a subtle illustration that maybe God feels as well.
The burning rose just ties into my other projects like Drugs & Suicide and Don’t Want You Back as an archetype for my love or love life, that everything beautiful and “rosey” comes with a few thorns
What has been the significance of “Complicated” in your journey in the music industry so far?
[MARCO DE VIL]: EXCITING! I’ve been sitting on “Complicated” for a while now and to see it touch soo many people like it has me is truly humbling, my purpose has never been clearer. “Complicated” has set me apart and made me different, I feel personally that I’m bringing a sound that uniquely puts me in my own lane. I want to stay different I also feel with the release of “Complicated” I’ve somewhat inspired many artists like myself, up and coming & even big names with being more vulnerable in their craft to even using inspiration from some of my work, it may not be intentional but to see that shows me that I’m doing something right, I’m on the right path and I clearly have something unique to offer. I feel like that’s all that matters, I’ve found my purpose and where I fit it. I feel like people are yet to see more Marco De Vil’s walking around in South Africa.
What advice would you give artists inspired by you?
Stay different – stay vulnerable. Keep peeling back the layers of yourself like an onion, till one day when you look in the mirror – things are unrecognizable and you begin to cry. Cry because you’ve been resilient in your pursuit, resilient in staying true and being YOU ! Hold on to one goal, and never let it go till it starts to manifest in your life
8Are there any other future projects or releases that Marco De Vil fans should look forward to?
[MARCO DE VIL]: Right now I can’t mention any names, but I’ve got a few projects lined up, one coming soon and a few mapped out for the rest of the year and I can say people are yet to see more of and sides to Marco De Vil.
