As the curtains draw to a close on his illustrious stage career, the dance world prepares to bid adieu to the multi-talented Gregory Maqoma. A dancer, choreographer, mentor, and cultural entrepreneur, Maqoma has left an indelible mark on the arts landscape. To honour his incredible contributions, Business and Arts South Africa (BASA) has chosen him as their Featured Artist for this year’s BASA Awards. Traditionally, the Featured Artist collaborates in the creation of the Award trophy. However, in a departure from the norm, BASA will celebrate Maqoma’s legacy by inviting him to grace the stage one last time. On the evening of October 13, 2023, the prestigious awards ceremony will unfold at the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary African Art in Cape Town, where Maqoma will deliver one of his final performances.

Ashraf Johaardien, the CEO of BASA, speaks highly of Maqoma’s unique journey: “Gregory Maqoma stands out as an extraordinary South African success story because he has artfully navigated the blending of creative clarity and exemplary talent with a sharp business acumen and a strong sense of value for his contribution as an artist.” Maqoma’s philosophy of collaboration has been instrumental in his global success, something he plans to carry forward even after retiring from the stage. He emphasizes, “Partnership is alignment; it’s about working together to achieve similar goals. I have had the opportunity to partner with organizations that have helped to shape and sustain my career.”

The BASA Awards itself is a celebration of partnerships between business and the arts that create mutual benefits. This year, the lineup of finalists includes longstanding partnerships like ATKV & Klein Karoo National Arts Festival (KKNK), as well as innovative projects such as E-Squared Investments & Sunshine Cinema’s Spark Impact Program. In addition to the tribute to Gregory Maqoma, attendees at the BASA Awards will be treated to performances by jazz musician Mandla Mlangeni and electric violinist Kirsty Bows.

Following the BASA Awards, Maqoma will head to Johannesburg for the GM50 Legacy Programme, taking place at the Joburg Theatre on October 14 and 15, 2023. Presented by Gregory Maqoma Industries and Vuyani Dance Theatre in Collaboration with Joburg Theatre, Arts Alive International Festival, City of Johannesburg Arts, Culture and Heritage, and Jacana Media, this event marks a celebration of Maqoma’s extraordinary career on the occasion of his 50th birthday.
