South Africa, renowned for its rich cultural heritage and contributions to the world of entertainment, is making waves yet again. The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF), an agency under the Department of Sport, Arts, and Culture (DSAC), announced the selection of “Music is My Life – Joseph Shabalala and Ladysmith Black Mambazo” as South Africa’s official entry in the International Feature Film category for the 96th Annual Academy Awards, affectionately known as the Oscars.

This significant decision was the culmination of a rigorous selection process undertaken by the South African Academy Awards Selection Committee. Comprising seasoned professionals representing various facets of the film industry, the committee was handpicked and approved by the Academy itself. The call for submissions closed on August 10, 2023, leading to the evaluation of four outstanding films between September 18 and 22, 2023. These screenings took place at Nu Metro cinemas in Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban, providing the committee with the opportunity to apply the Academy Awards’ stringent Best International Feature Film eligibility criteria.

To ensure the integrity of the selection process, the NFVF engaged the services of the reputable firm SNG Grant Thornton, which assessed the judging procedure meticulously. After deliberating on September 22, 2023, the selection committee’s final decision was clear: “Music is My Life – Joseph Shabalala and Ladysmith Black Mambazo” had received the highest votes, emerging as the official entry once scores were tallied and audited.

“Music is My Life” is a heartfelt tribute to the late South African musician, Dr. Joseph Shabalala, whose fame transcended borders with his iconic group, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, and his pivotal contribution to Paul Simon’s acclaimed “Graceland” album. The documentary is skillfully produced by the seasoned award-winning producer Carolyn Carew, renowned for her work spanning across the African continent, featured on platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and eVOD, among others. This feature film was shot over a span of five years, offering viewers a captivating glimpse into Dr. Shabalala’s creative journey through the lens of his remarkable life.

The film brilliantly showcases South Africa’s diverse culture and celebrates one of its most distinct traditional musical forms, isicathamiya. Dr. Shabalala’s contribution to making this genre globally relevant is explored, providing a touching narrative that resonates both locally and internationally.

Since its release, “Music is My Life” has graced screens at various local and international film festivals, earning praise and admiration from audiences worldwide, including countries like the United States, New Zealand, Australia, and Spain, to name just a few. At home, it was warmly received with screenings at the Labia Cinema, and on what would have been Dr. Shabalala’s 83rd birthday, the film was broadcast on the SABC 1 channel, reaching countless South African households.

Ms. Thobela Mayinje, the NFVF’s Acting CEO, expressed her delight, stating, “It is always a great and privileged opportunity to have a South African film represent the country at the global industry’s foremost awards. The fact that this particular film tells the authentic South African story of the iconic Dr. Shabalala makes it even more special.”

Now, all eyes are on the 96th Annual Academy Awards, with official nominations set to be announced on January 23, 2024. South Africa, through “Music is My Life,” has cemented its presence on the global stage, ready to celebrate the unique stories that emerge from its vibrant culture.
