To commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Nafasi Art Space, with the backing of the European Union (EU), organized an art competition. This event provided a platform for young artists, aged 12 to 25, to articulate their perceptions of human rights through their artistic creations.

Rebecca Mungo’s impactful photograph, titled “Dancing Beyond the Limit,” taken at a music festival in Dar es Salaam, conveys a profound message. The image captures a jubilant disabled man immersed in the music, moving with unrestrained passion. Through this compelling visual, Rebecca communicates a crucial idea: that everyone, regardless of ability, deserves the right to experience joy, partake in entertainment, and pursue happiness without hindrance.

Rebecca elucidates, “By showcasing a person with a disability dancing with such passion, I wanted to underscore our inherent human rights – the right to inclusivity, enjoyment, and the pursuit of happiness. This image serves as a celebration of the human spirit, reminding us that the essence of human rights resonates in every musical note and every step we take.”

The resonance of Rebecca’s powerful message led her to clinch victory in the Nafasi Art Space’s Human Rights Art Competition. Sponsored by the European Union in honour of the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the competition aimed to empower young voices to articulate their perspectives on human rights through artistic expression.

Numerous submissions were received from talented youths aged 12-25 across Tanzania. Six finalists were ultimately selected – three in the age group 12-17 and three in the group 18-25. The results were communicated to them on December 10, the International Day of Human Rights, and the official award ceremony took place on December 14, 2023.

During the ceremony, EU Ambassador to Tanzania, Christine Grau, commended the competition’s impact, emphasizing the enduring importance of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in safeguarding the fundamental rights and freedoms of all individuals, regardless of their background. She praised the artists for their creative and passionate interpretations of human rights, highlighting the significant role of youth in advocating for and safeguarding these rights.

Ambassador Grau addressed the young artists, stating, “Your powerful expressions can spark crucial conversations, raise awareness, and inspire others to take action. You are the artists, the advocates, the change-makers of tomorrow.”

Lilian Mushi, Executive Director of Nafasi’s Art Space, further underscored the competition’s role in promoting awareness about human rights, including the global campaign against gender-based violence. She emphasized the significance of providing young people with a platform to engage in vital conversations about their rights and contribute to a more just and equitable world.
