In a groundbreaking initiative aimed at fostering entrepreneurship within the Cultural and Creative Industries (CCI), the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs launched Création Africa in 2023. Now, in a thrilling development, the Embassy of France, The French Institute of South Africa (IFAS), and UVU Africa have unveiled the shortlist of 40 innovative projects selected for the program, representing a diverse array of creative ventures across South Africa, Lesotho, and Malawi. The Création Africa program, valued at R24 million, signals France’s commitment to bolstering economic growth and supporting the vibrant youth culture across Africa. With a sharp focus on nurturing talent, promoting entrepreneurship, and advancing the creative industries, Création Africa has garnered widespread attention and acclaim.

H.E. David Martinon, Ambassador of France to South Africa, Lesotho, and Malawi, expressed his satisfaction with the overwhelming response to the program, highlighting its role in championing diversity and inclusivity. Among the 702 applications received, 40 standout initiatives were meticulously selected, embodying the rich tapestry of cultures, economic sectors, and gender representation in the region.
During a rigorous selection process, 72 pre-selected applicants had the opportunity to pitch their visionary ideas and growth strategies to a distinguished panel of jurors. Drawing from expertise within the Embassy of France, IFAS, UVU Africa, Bpifrance, and other industry specialists, the panel identified projects poised to make a significant impact in their respective fields.
The chosen initiatives, comprising 35% female representation, span a spectrum of disciplines including fashion, design, audiovisual media, video games, music, literature, visual arts, and performing arts. Reflecting the dynamic landscape of creativity in the region, these projects encapsulate the entrepreneurial spirit and cultural vitality of South Africa, Lesotho, and Malawi.
Moving forward, the selected entrepreneurs will embark on a month-long mentoring program facilitated by UVU Africa, delving into crucial aspects of business development, marketing strategies, corporate finance, and access to funding. This immersive experience aims to equip participants with the tools and knowledge necessary to thrive in the competitive creative market.
As part of the program’s evolution, Bpifrance has joined forces as a strategic investment partner, opening avenues for global partnerships and networking opportunities. Graduates of Création Africa will benefit from a tailored incubation program, providing further support and guidance over a five-month period. Additionally, an immersion program through Bpifrance’s platform, Euroquity, promises exposure to new markets and potential investors.
Ultimately, Création Africa aspires to cultivate an ecosystem where cultural initiatives flourish, empowering Africa’s emerging creative entrepreneurs to drive sustainable economic growth on both national and continental scales. With innovation at its core, Création Africa stands as a beacon of hope, championing the transformative power of creativity in shaping the future of Africa’s cultural landscape.
