Curious to know more about Yugoszn’s musical journey, creative process, and the stories behind the tracks in “YUGOSZN”? Let’s get into our exclusive interview to discover the man behind the music.

Can you walk us through your journey, from where you come from to falling in love with music leading to your debut single “Before Before” to your latest EP “YUGOSZN”?

[YUGOSZN]: I’m from Imo State and I was born in Lagos. I grew up listening to music from the likes of Michael Jackson, Eminem, 2Pac, Phil Collins, etc. And so discovering that I have the ability to give back and express myself through music right from Primary school, I doubled down and started making music. Expressing my emotions and telling stories through songs like “Before Before” and experimenting with other sounds/genres, leading to a masterpiece such as “YUGOSZN.”

“Renegade” gained significant traction especially on TikTok. Could you share the inspiration behind this track and how you felt gaining such success?

[YUGOSZN]: Renegade was a true story by the way. If you listen closely to the second verse, it’s literally me summarizing what happened and how I felt about it. And seeing so much people comment about how they really relate to the words and how they’ve experienced similar situations and how the song is like “therapy” to them. That really meant the world to me.

You had a lot of support from fellow artists like Libianca who shared your “Jah” cover video with their fanbase? What’s your thoughts on artists coming together in support of one another instead of being in competition with one another?

[YUGOSZN]: I feel like competition is fine but it has to be a healthy competition where there’s a balance of competition and support within the artist community where artists are showing love to other artists and vice versa.

“Tombstone” is one of your most-streamed tracks. What was the creative process like collaborating with Connor Price on this song?

[YUGOSZN]: Connor Price is a wonderful person and a very talented individual, hands down. Big shoutout to his team for giving me the opportunity to represent Nigeria with that collaboration. The creative process was amazing, and very fast-paced which was a new fun experience for me.

Your Spotify following has grown substantially since the release of “Tombstone.” What promotional strategies or experiences do you attribute to this growth?

[YUGOSZN]: I’d say working with Connor played a huge role and exposed me to a lot of new fans. And also constantly entertaining people with stunning visuals of the music on social media also played a role in my growth.

Your EP “YUGOSZN” has finally dropped. Could you give us some insights into some of the themes and inspirations behind the tracks featured on the EP?

[YUGOSZN]: “YUGOSZN” was an introduction of myself to the world. And it’s a really diverse experience with songs like “No Be Crime” and “Renegade” being inspired by heartbreak and “Freedom” being inspired by the concept of “peace of mind and liberty from the struggles of this world.” It’s a beautiful work of art.

As an artist, what message or feeling did you aim to convey through your music on this EP, particularly with tracks like “Delusional,” “Guy Like Me,” and “Love & Highlife”?

[YUGOSZN]: “Delusional” was a message to a certain type of people that always carry a flawed mindset that limits them from surpassing their full potential. It was more like a wake up call. “Love and Highlife” expresses genuine love for a person but the Igbo way 😂. It’s the feeling of love from an Igbo boy. It’s the feeling of love from an Igbo boy. “Guy Like Me” is a story about the outcome of when a playgirl falls in love with a playboy who’s questioning if her love is actually genuine.

How do you navigate the balance between staying true to your artistic vision and adapting to trends, as seen in your success on platforms like TikTok?

[YUGOSZN]: Honestly, I just keep it original and true with my art and then I push it to people that enjoy it. And that can be quite challenging at first but trust me, as long as your music is good, there are people out there that your music will resonate with no matter what.

With your rising popularity, what responsibilities do you feel towards your fan base and the music industry at large?

[YUGOSZN]: I feel like I owe them more music 😂

For aspiring artists inspired by your journey, what advice or lessons learned would you share with them about pursuing a career in music?

[YUGOSZN]: One advice I would give to any aspiring artist is the act of praying. It’s very underrated but it works wonders. if you’re unsure of what to do, prayer works every time. And also staying consistent and being open to learning from others and everything. Lastly, be humble, it’ll take you very far in life.
