Mzansi’s vibrant football culture finds a striking expression in the artistry of renowned South African visual artist, Karabo Poppy. In a collaboration with Spanish football league, LALIGA, and video game developers EA SPORTS™, Poppy has transformed the surrounds of Africa’s only five-a-side football pitch, located against the backdrop of the iconic coastline of Clifton, Cape Town, into a canvas of creativity.

The unveiling of Poppy’s murals marked a significant moment at the launch of FC FUTURES, a grassroots development platform aimed at nurturing young football talent. The event, attended by notable figures including LALIGA Managing Director for Africa, Tresor Penku, and former Bafana Bafana player Nasief Morris, showcased the convergence of art, sport, and community.

As part of the launch festivities, children from Morris’ N5 Football Academy were treated to a special training session, learning invaluable skills and techniques to hone their football prowess. Representing Africa on the global stage, the Fives Futbol pitch in Clifton, Cape Town, joins three other FC FUTURES pitches launched in Mexico, Spain, and Singapore.

Initiated by LALIGA and EA Sports, FC FUTURES aims to make a meaningful investment in grassroots football development worldwide. From pitch restoration to providing access to football facilities, donating equipment, and training coaches, the initiative seeks to empower young talents and nurture their potential. In collaboration with the South African Football Association, LALIGA will also select players for a transformative opportunity to train at the LALIGA Academy Madrid while receiving top-notch education, promising a pathway to excellence in both sport and life.
