In recent years, African music has captivated the world, with genres like Amapiano and Afrobeats leading the charge. This cultural wave has not only brought African rhythms to international audiences but has also propelled the region’s music industry to unprecedented heights. According to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) 2024 report, Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) boasts the fastest-growing music industry globally, with revenues skyrocketing by 24.7%, the only region surpassing 20% growth.
A significant factor driving this growth is the surge in paid streaming revenues, which now contribute 24.5% to the region’s overall music revenue. This transformation is most evident in South Africa, the largest market in SSA, which experienced a 19.9% revenue increase, contributing a substantial 77% of the total regional revenue. The expansion of internet access has played a crucial role, enabling platforms like Spotify to help artists transcend geographical boundaries, grow their fan bases, and monetize their art effectively.
Spotify’s annual report, Loud & Clear, highlights the transparency in the streaming economy and details the earnings of artists on its platform. The 2024 report underscores the remarkable growth in royalties for South African artists:
- Royalties Growth: In 2023, South African artists earned nearly 256 million ZAR from Spotify alone, marking a nearly 240% increase since 2019 and over 500% since 2017.
- Discoverability: South African artists were discovered by first-time listeners over 735 million times on Spotify in 2023.
- Earnings Milestones: The number of South African artists earning over 100,000 ZAR in royalties from Spotify has increased more than fivefold since 2018.
- Playlist Inclusions: In 2023, nearly 2,800 South African artists were featured on editorial playlists on Spotify.
Jocelyne Muhutu-Remy, Spotify’s SSA Managing Director, emphasizes the platform’s commitment to supporting artists: “South African artists’ streaming revenues on Spotify keep growing every year, a true testament to their immense talent. It’s a privilege to continue supporting them, in keeping with our vision of ensuring all professional artists can make a living off their art.”
Amapiano, South Africa’s biggest musical export, exemplifies the global appeal of African music. Known for its infectious beats and viral dance routines, Amapiano has taken the world by storm. Spotify’s data reveals that the genre’s popularity is only increasing:
- Local Consumption: In South Africa, local music consumption grew by 101% in 2023.
- Female Artists: While the industry remains male-dominated, female artists are making significant strides, with average streams for female artists increasing by 49% year-on-year in 2023.
- Playlist Additions: Amapiano tracks have been added to over 14 million playlists, representing a 566% growth from 2018 to 2023.
This phenomenal rise of Amapiano and the broader success of African music genres like Afrobeats highlight the dynamic and evolving nature of the global music landscape. As streaming continues to democratize music distribution, African artists are poised to reach even greater heights, bringing the vibrant sounds of the continent to every corner of the globe.
