The music industry has long been a male-dominated space, presenting challenges for female creatives—be they singers, songwriters, or producers—to gain recognition. Yet, the tides are turning. Icons like Taylor Swift, Adele, Billie Eilish, Alicia Keys, and Beyoncé have risen to the top, carving out spaces for themselves and advocating for the empowerment of other women in the industry. In South Africa, a rich musical history features women icons across generations, from Miriam Makeba, Brenda Fassie, and Busi Mhlongo to Lebo Mathosa and Zahara. Building on this legacy, Sheer Publishing Africa, the continent’s leading independent music publisher, is committed to nurturing the next generation of female talent. Demonstrating this commitment, Sheer Publishing sponsored the ‘Songwriter of The Year’ award at the 2024 Basadi in Music Awards, held on August 10 at the Joburg Theatre in Braamfontein, Johannesburg.
The Basadi in Music Awards, founded in 2022, is a ceremony dedicated to celebrating and honoring women in South Africa’s music industry. The awards recognize the achievements of singers, rappers, DJs, composers, producers, and various other creatives in the music ecosystem. With winners chosen by public vote, the event embodies the spirit of uplifting and showcasing what women can achieve when given the platform to shine.
This year, Afro-soul artist Brenda Mtambo won the prestigious ‘Songwriter of The Year’ award for her song Bhaluyacima. Expressing her gratitude on social media, Mtambo shared, “I’ve always said I’m first a writer before I’m a singer and as I write this caption I’m literally lost for words. Writing music has healed me in so many ways… I dedicate this award to my grandmother who I wish would have lived a couple more days to witness last night, maBiyela I know you are celebrating me where you are.”
Another standout from the evening was singer-songwriter LwahNdunkulu, a Sheer Publishing client, who took home both the ‘Most Streamed Song’ award and the highly coveted ‘Artist of the Year’ award. “At Sheer Publishing, we are proud to support and celebrate the achievements of women who are not only shaping the future of African music but also leading the way for the next generation of artists,” said Thando Makhunga, Managing Director of Sheer Publishing Africa.
While August is celebrated as Women’s Month in South Africa, Sheer Publishing Africa champions female talent year-round. Recent signings include rapper and hitmaker Anele Zondo and singer and Blood and Water actress Khosi Ngema, both of whom bring unique artistry and influence to the music scene. Anele Zondo, also known as Ney The Bae, is a multifaceted talent who has amassed a significant following, not just as an influencer but also as a presenter and actress. Born and raised in KwaZulu-Natal, Zondo has steadily built her career, and her debut EP marks a new chapter in her journey. Similarly, Khosi Ngema, a rising star known for her role as Fikile Bhele in Netflix’s Blood and Water, is a multi-instrumentalist whose debut single Why showcases her dynamic creativity and resilience.
As Sheer Publishing Africa continues to support and celebrate the achievements of female creatives, their efforts contribute to a more equitable and vibrant music industry across the continent.
