At just 14 years old, Reneiloe Mathebula is already making waves in the entertainment industry, and her sights are set on New York City. The young South African actress, who has dreamed of gracing the big screen since childhood, is now on the verge of making her American dream a reality. With unshakable confidence in her future, Reneiloe declares, “I see myself in one of the biggest movies, yet to be released. I see myself walking on stage to receive a Grammy.” It’s a bold statement, but one that is backed by her relentless determination and passion for acting. “For as long as I can remember, acting has been a burning passion of mine, but things have not always gone according to plan,” she admits.
The Pretoria-based performer faced a significant setback in 2022 when a hurricane in Orlando canceled her flight home to South Africa, forcing her to miss the chance to perform in front of international talent scouts at The International Arts Talent Showcase (IATS). However, rather than letting the disappointment deter her, Reneiloe recorded an audition video from her hotel room, seizing the moment to showcase her talent. “When I got home, I received a call asking me to audition for the IATS,” Reneiloe recalls. “That changed everything, and the next thing I knew, I was selected to go to New York, with an AMDA scholarship and awards in my hands.”
Now, in 2024, Reneiloe is preparing to board a plane to New York for what could be her big break. Over the past two years, she has honed her craft and gained valuable experience, including starring in music videos, such as a recent shoot for international Grammy-winning artist Tyla. Reflecting on the experience, she says, “I had been in music videos before, but this one was different. I got to interact with different people from different walks of life. I played the role of being a side cheer, and it was really great to watch talented people at work. I admire them for that.”
When asked why she was chosen for the role, Reneiloe attributes it to her faith and character. “I believe that one’s character and values can be seen even in pictures,” she explains. “A picture silently speaks a thousand words. I think the photo that I submitted spoke words silently. Also, humility is something that extends beyond borders, and I am humbled by the opportunities that have been afforded me in this industry.”
Reneiloe’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance and belief in oneself. Her journey from Pretoria to New York at such a young age is proof that anything is possible with hard work and faith. “It doesn’t matter how many no’s you get; trust God’s timing,” she says, a motto that has guided her success.
But Reneiloe’s ambitions extend beyond acting. Having faced bullying from a young age, she is passionate about telling stories that inspire change in how people treat one another. She also envisions a future where she can create opportunities for other creatives in the industry by running her own business.
As Reneiloe Mathebula prepares to chase her dreams in New York City, she hopes her journey will inspire others to believe in themselves and reach for greatness, no matter the obstacles they face. Check out our #LAMag Issue 5 featuring Reneiloe inside!
