South Africa’s beloved hip-hop festival, Maftown Heights, is set to make a triumphant return on Friday, 29 November 2024, with a reunion edition that promises to unite iconic artists and new talent. After a hiatus, the festival known for its celebration of hip-hop, Motswako, and local urban culture will take place at the legendary Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown, Johannesburg. Tickets have gone on sale from Friday, 4 October 2024.
A Tribute to Motswako’s Cultural Legacy
More than just a music festival, Maftown Heights has always been a platform celebrating the rich cultural heritage of Motswako—a genre that blends Setswana and English rap. Since its inception, the festival has grown into a powerful stage for some of South Africa’s greatest artists, including the late HHP, AKA, and Riky Rick, and in 2024, the celebration continues with a lineup that bridges the past and future of African music. This year’s festival will be a long-awaited reunion for Motswako pioneers and emerging stars alike. A special highlight of the event is the introduction of “NuTswako” artists, a new generation carrying the genre forward, led by festival curator Maglera Doe Boy alongside Motswako icon Khuli Chana.

Maftown Heights 2024 will be more than a concert—it’s a cultural movement. Festival-goers can expect an immersive experience filled with vibrant music, cutting-edge fashion, and delicious food, all capturing the essence of unity, originality, and creative expression that defines Motswako. Festival co-founders Khuli Chana and Refiloe Ramogase expressed their excitement for the upcoming event: “We are thrilled to return with a reunion edition of Maftown Heights. Maftown Heights is more than just a festival; it’s a movement that continues to inspire and shape youth culture in South Africa.
