Canal Walk Shopping Centre is celebrating the arrival of Spring and Summer with a vibrant new art installation, inspired by nature and brought to life through community collaboration. This seasonal transformation combines the beauty of Cape Town’s landscape with the creativity of over 28 local artists, designers, and 200 young learners. At the heart of the Spring display is the Blue Butterfly installation, a striking symbol of hope and transformation. This intricate artwork, adorned with over 200,000 beads, was created by students from Marconi Bean Primary School under the guidance of master beading artist Thokozani Twala. The butterfly’s metal armature, designed by Philip Coote in collaboration with Wench and Art Afrique, took four months to complete. This collaborative effort celebrates creativity, craftsmanship, and environmental consciousness.

One young artist expressed the joy and inspiration they felt: “Today I have learnt that you can be anything you want to be in life.” Visitors are invited to capture their own magical moments with this stunning piece, designed as a symbol of renewal and joy.

In addition to the Blue Butterfly, the “Spring Butterflies in Flight” installation by Louis Chanu and the “Spring Clouds” wallpaper by Kelly O’Brien and Lightfarm complete the immersive experience, offering visitors a vibrant celebration of nature’s beauty.

As Summer approaches, the spotlight shifts to the Fynbos and Bee installation, which highlights the importance of bees in maintaining biodiversity. A bee sculpture, designed by Philip Coote and crafted by Art Afrique, is surrounded by vibrant floral displays of fynbos, proteas, and succulents. These paper flowers were handcrafted by Claire Fluhr and her team at Cuttin Paper, while students from Marconi Bean Primary and Sinenjongo High School helped create the accompanying leaves.

“The Summer installation captures both the beauty of the Cape and the role bees play in our ecosystem,” said a student participant. Visitors are also encouraged to relax on the colorful Fynbos Apple Seat, painted by artist Nathan Sanan.

This installation is a testament to Canal Walk’s dedication to community and environmental stewardship. Led by Carol Hogarth of Art Afrique, with support from Grammy-winner Robin Hogarth, students gained hands-on experience in artmaking while learning about sustainability. As a token of appreciation, each child received a beaded butterfly or flower kit.

Both installations offer perfect selfie opportunities for visitors. Don’t miss your chance to experience these breathtaking displays, capturing memories with the Blue Butterfly or enjoying the vibrant Fynbos Apple Seat.
