Exploring the intricate dance between individuality and unity, Mpho Machate’s upcoming exhibition, Individuation of the Whole, is a masterful display of abstract art. The exhibition, hosted at Sisonke Gallery in Cape Town’s Cape Heritage Hotel, runs till 26 January 2025, offering visitors an immersive journey into the dualities of form, color, and texture.

A Dynamic Visual Narrative

Machate’s work is an arresting fusion of mediums—inks, oils, and stencils—crafted with a meticulous eye for detail. Drawing inspiration from textured surfaces in nature and urban landscapes, his pieces echo the patterns of cracked walls and floors, while fine lines resemble roads and boundaries. The juxtaposition of bold colors and intricate details creates a harmonious tension that mirrors the paradox of isolation and togetherness.

Music, particularly jazz, plays a pivotal role in Machate’s creative process. Just as individual musicians contribute to a collective composition, the elements of his paintings coalesce into a powerful and unified visual experience. This musical influence infuses his work with rhythm and flow, inviting viewers to reflect on the interplay between separation and unity, a theme that resonates deeply throughout the collection.

From Clay Creations to Fine Art Excellence

Machate’s artistic journey began in his childhood, where he expressed his creativity through crafting clay toys. This passion evolved into formal studies in fine art at the Tshwane University of Technology, setting the stage for his career. Over the years, he has participated in notable exhibitions, including the RMB Turbine Art Fair in Sandton and The Grand African Art Society in Midrand.

His works have gained national and international recognition. In 2019, Machate was selected for the JP Morgan Abadali Art Programme, which led to his art being displayed at the bank’s Johannesburg and Cape Town offices. In 2022, the National Museum Bloemfontein acquired two of his works, Not All Those Who Wander Are Lost and The Truth Within, further cementing his place in South Africa’s contemporary art scene. Recently, his talents extended to the music world, designing an EP cover for Nando’s Amipanio Album as part of the 2023 Nando’s Creative Exchange group exhibition.

A Self-Curated Exploration of Philosophy

Presented by HUB, this solo exhibition is entirely self-curated, reflecting Machate’s deep engagement with philosophical ideas. Each piece invites viewers to explore their place within the intricate web of life, encouraging introspection and connection. The exhibition is a cohesive collection, with each artwork offering its unique perspective while contributing to the overarching theme of unity in diversity.
