South Africa’s leading youth radio station, 5FM, and Grammy-winning star Tyla made one Joburg teen’s dream come true by surprising him at his matric dance! It all started when Mollwane “Mo” Madiba posted a video on TikTok in February with the hashtag #MOandTYLAForMD asking Tyla to be his dance date. The video went viral, catching the attention of fans, the media and 5FM. Impressed by Mo’s boldness and charm, 5FM jumped in to support his dream. They interviewed him, followed his journey on-air, and rallied South Africans to get behind him.

At first, Tyla’s team said she wouldn’t be able to attend. Mo was still over the moon that she’d noticed him at all. But 5FM had one more surprise up their sleeve… At Mo’s matric dance, held at St. Stithians Boys’ College, everything was already glamorous. Mo looked sharp, 5FM was there to cover it, and the vibe was electric. Then, after the formalities, Tyla’s new song “Is It” played to massive cheers one of its first-ever live plays.

And just when everyone thought that was it… the big reveal happened! Tyla was there. In person. The crowd went wild. She walked in, hugged Mo, and spent time celebrating with him and the guests before heading off. It was a once-in-a-lifetime moment that started with a hopeful TikTok and became something magical.

Mo was blown away saying “I was literally dateless because I asked Tyla… and then Tyla pulled through! She said, ‘Come, we’re singing!’ and shouted ‘Mollwane and Tyla for MD!’ I’ll never forget it!” 5FM’s Business Manager Masi Mdingane said “This is what 5FM is all about celebrating youth courage and making the impossible happen. Huge thanks to Tyla and her team for making Mo’s dream come true.”

The magic didn’t stop there. Inspired by this story, 5FM launched #5FMPROMPOSAL, starting Monday, 30 June. If you’re in matric and want to ask your date in the most iconic way possible, 5FM’s got your back. Whether it’s a flash mob, a TikTok-worthy moment, or something totally unexpected, Jodell Tantij, Tom Hele, and Mtha Agbiriogu – the Ministers of Promposal – are here to help!
