A Historic Legacy

This momentous release marks a milestone in the group’s remarkable four-decade journey — a journey that has profoundly shaped South Africa’s cultural and spiritual landscape. Known for their stirring vocal harmonies and spiritual depth, Amadodana Ase Wesile’s music has long transcended religious spaces, resonating everywhere from traditional church congregations to contemporary cultural stages like NIROX Sculpture Park.

Formed in 1985 by Thomas Mokhati within the Methodist Church of Southern Africa, the group has become synonymous with African gospel traditions, spiritual storytelling, and multi-generational influence.

Cultural Recognition

Their contributions have extended far beyond music. In April 2024, acclaimed fashion designer Lukhanyo Mdingihonoured the choir in his Provenance Part Two exhibition at Constitution Hill, using the hymn “Siyakudumisa Thixo” as a sonic archive of cultural memory. Mdingi described the group as a “National Treasure,” recognising their deep influence on South Africa’s spiritual and creative heritage.

Further celebrating this legacy, the University of Johannesburg hosted a commemorative event in September 2025 honouring Amadodana Ase Wesile and founder Thomas Mokhati. Chaired by Dr. Victor Ramathesele, the gathering brought together scholars, artists, and community members to reflect on the group’s lasting contributions — cementing their role as cultural custodians.

Awards, Achievements & Global Reach

With seven South African Music Awards (SAMAs) and a catalogue of critically acclaimed albums, Amadodana Ase Wesile stands among the most celebrated gospel ensembles in the country.

Their international acclaim was solidified when they won First Prize at the International Gospel Music Festival in Istanbul, Turkey. From humble beginnings in Soweto, their journey has taken them to concert halls across Europe, the Middle East, and neighbouring countries like Botswana and Lesotho — where they’ve introduced global audiences to the power and beauty of South African gospel.
