Today marks a major milestone for South African singer, songwriter, and producer Una Rams as he releases his highly anticipated debut album, meet me at the altar. The project is a deeply personal, poetic expression of a once-in-a-lifetime season preparing for marriage, stepping into manhood, and choosing love with intention.
What began as a wedding playlist soon evolved into a genre-blending album rooted in Afro-fusion, soul, R&B, and the sonic textures of Una’s Venda heritage. meet me at the altar preserves memory, emotion, and meaning in every track.
“This is the first time I’ve been able to write about my life in real time,” Una shares. “Instead of reflecting on the past, I wanted to honour what was happening as it happened. This is an album dedicated to my now-wife, but it’s also a celebration of tradition, family, and faith.”
From the gentle intimacy of “nguwe” to the celebratory rhythms of “takala,” the album plays like a wedding in motion: heartfelt, layered, and real. The lead single, “tshinakaho,” has already resonated widely becoming a cultural anthem played at weddings across Venda communities. Its vibrant production and powerful message have turned it into a staple for traditional ceremonies.
“That song isn’t just mine anymore—it belongs to the people,” Una says. “And that’s what this whole album is about. Creating music that feels communal. That reminds us who we are and what we come from.”
During the recording process, Una immersed himself in cultural research, learning the meanings behind rites and traditions that shaped his own wedding. That cultural depth is embedded throughout the album, turning it into what he calls a “sonic museum.”
“I wanted to distil tradition into sound. To make something that reminds and teaches at the same time.”
