New HBO Documentary Examines Wizkid’s Global Influence And Lagos Cultural Legacy

The HBO Original documentary MUSIC BOX: WIZKID: LONG LIVE LAGOS debuts December 11 as part of the “Music Box” series created by Bill Simmons. Directed by Karam Gill, the film follows Nigerian superstar Wizkid as he prepares for his landmark performance at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.

The documentary traces how Wizkid’s rise from Lagos to global recognition demonstrates the power of music to reshape perception. With no formal music industry infrastructure in Nigeria during his early career, he relied on talent, determination, and a clear belief that success could shift narratives about the continent.

WIZKID: LONG LIVE LAGOS explores the relationship between the United Kingdom and Nigeria, the legacy of colonialism, and the ways global audiences increasingly access African music through digital platforms. Wizkid’s voice becomes a vehicle for challenging outdated stereotypes, presenting contemporary African identity, and highlighting the continent’s cultural influence.

As the first African artist to headline Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, his career underscores how global visibility can function as cultural reclamation. The documentary features perspectives from fans and collaborators across Africa and London, expanding on how art and music contribute to broader conversations about identity and representation.

The “Music Box” series continues its tradition of examining significant moments in music culture, adding Wizkid’s story to its growing collection of documentary films. Watch on  THURSDAY, DECEMBER 11 (9:00 –10:25 p.m. ET/PT) on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max.
