Rising Nigerian star Fido joined Nandi Madida for an insightful conversation on Apple Music 1. They explored faith, inspiration and the pivotal moment that changed everything. This Africa Now Radio episode, hosted by Nandi Madida, features a candid FaceTime interview with the fast-rising Nigerian Afrobeats artist Fido.

Broadcasting globally on Apple Music 1, the episode delves into Fido’s personal journey, creative growth and his new EP, Olayemi.

Fido on Finding His Sound and His Purpose
In conversation with Madida, Fido opens up about the foundation of his music career, which began with formal training and faith.
“I attended the PEFTI Film Institute and studied music technology, where I had to learn all of the basics in music and what it takes to be a musician. That really shaped my journey,” he explains.
He also credits church and family as early catalysts: “My mom is a Christian mother and she always told me, ‘You should work for God.’ Joining the choir — that started it all.”
On His Musical Influences
Fido situates his sound within a lineage of Afrobeats greats while remaining open to global inspiration.
“I got a lot of inspiration from Wizkid — he was my top rising artist for the last 10, 15 years. I really tapped into Wiz, 2Face, Olamide, Burna Boy, even Davido. But also international sounds. It’s about connecting with the right sound.”
The Story Behind “Awolowo”
Reflecting on his 2024 breakout hit, Fido recalls a moment of uncertainty that turned into divine alignment.
“At the time I recorded this song I was down. I had no money. The moment my producer played the beat, I just knew — this is the sound. ‘Awolowo’ came from nowhere.”
“When I dropped it, God just said, ‘This is your time.’”
Why His New EP Is Called Olayemi
Named after his given name, Olayemi is deeply autobiographical.
“It reflects my journey from the hood in Ogun State — my childhood, my struggles. All eight songs tell little stories about my journey from the hood to now, being a global artist. It was about discovering myself.”
On Working With Kizz Daniel
Fido also discusses collaborating with Kizz Daniel on the remix of “Joy Is Coming,” calling the partnership both strategic and fan-led.
“Kizz Daniel is one of the greatest artists in Nigeria. Fans have been asking for it, so I wanted to surprise them. Whatever the fans ask from me, I have to deliver.”
Becoming Part of Afrobeats History
As one of Nigeria’s new generation of storytellers, Fido sees his rise as both liberation and responsibility.
“It feels like breaking out of a bondage I’ve been stuck in for years. It feels like Fido is now free. When they list artists doing great things in Afrobeats, they will list my name too. This is just the beginning.”

As Fido’s story continues to unfold, this episode captures an artist stepping fully into his purpose with faith, clarity, and the world finally listening. This interview happened on Friday, August 1 at 9 a.m. Lagos/London, 10 a.m. Johannesburg/Paris, 1 a.m. LA, and 4 a.m. NYC, exclusively on Apple Music 1. Follow @mrfidooooo for more updates!
