The SAFTAs Are This Weekend, and Streaming Platforms Are Positioned to Dominate

As the South African film and television industry prepares to converge this weekend for the 19th Annual SAFTAs, the underlying data from this year’s nominees reveals a sector undergoing a fundamental power shift. The event, themed One Story. One Industry. One Future., kicks off on Friday, 13 March, yet the most immediate deadline for audiences looms tomorrow: the closure of public voting on 11 March.

A review of the submission data, initially released by the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) in mid-February, indicates robust recovery and increased output. A record 434 compliant entries were processed by a 156-member jury, a notable 25% jump from the previous cycle. However, the distribution of these nods exposes the accelerating dominance of video-on-demand services over traditional linear broadcasting.

While established local production houses held their ground, Tshedza Pictures secured 24 nominations (anchored by iThonga and Youngins) and Quizzical Pictures earned 22 (led by Reyka S2), streaming platforms are dictating the new standard of critical acclaim. Showmax and Netflix amassed an overwhelming 59 and 55 nominations, respectively, consolidating industry recognition away from free-to-air channels.

Despite this digital migration for premium series and feature films, daily linear soaps and telenovelas remain the undisputed anchors of public engagement. This tension is reflected in the categories still open to public participation, where productions from Penguin Films (Skemergrond), MMSV Productions (Generations: The Legacy), and newcomers like The Milton Empire (Inimba S1) rely on traditional daily viewership to drive votes.

Addressing the cultural weight of these daily broadcasts amidst global and national pressures, the NFVF’s Acting Chief Executive Officer, Ms. Onke Dumeko, provided the following perspective:

“Historically, film and television in South Africa have always been at the forefront of keeping the nation informed, educated and entertained. It is fitting, therefore, that the producers, directors, actors, and all involved in this important job get the recognition they deserve and that they be celebrated for the great work they do in keeping important conversations ongoing. All you have to do is see the social media pages for intense but fun discussions about a local soap or telenovela, which tells you that these productions are part of the daily lives of so many South Africans. One can even go as far as saying they are part of the nation’s coping mechanism with all that is going on in the country and across the world, and the SAFTAs are a fitting way to give a nod to the incredible work of all these creatives in the film and television industry.”

The weekend’s proceedings are strategically split to accommodate both technical execution and mainstream celebrity. Friday’s Craft Awards will bypass traditional television entirely, streaming exclusively via YouTube, while Saturday’s Main Show Awards will maintain a traditional simulcast on Mzansi Magic and SABC 2, preceded by a Red Carpet special.
