Following a sold-out and sensational launch of the Sankofa Album at Carnival City Johannesburg, legendary South African musician Thandiswa Mazwai will perform music from Sankofa at Durban Playhouse on 31 May and Artscape in Cape Town on 20 July. The tour will also feature songs from Thandiswa’s iconic debut solo album, Zabalaza, which marks its 20th anniversary this year. Tickets are available on Webtickets, with the tour generously supported by Castle Milk Stout.
Regarding her latest album Sankofa, released on May 10, Thandiswa explains: “Sankofa in the Ghanaian language Twi means to go back and retrieve what’s been left behind – what is essential, what honors you, and what requires healing. It feels fitting that as I launch this new work, my seminal album Zabalaza, celebrates 20 years. For me, this is the year of Sankofa.” Recorded in Johannesburg, Dakar, and New York, the album blends archival Xhosa music, jazz, and West African rhythms. It features songs produced by Meshell Ndegeocello, Chris Bruce, Nduduzo Makhathini, Tendai Shoko, and Thandiswa. The album is available on all streaming platforms.
About the Sankofa Tour, Thandiswa says “I am so excited to share this new music with my fans. It is such a privilege to still be able to do what I love after 30yrs in this industry. Ndibulela ngazozibini for all the love and support. Thank you to Castle Milk Stout, a brand that celebrates tradition and culture, for supporting this tour. We are so excited to be partnering with this iconic African brand to bring this show to Durban and Cape Town. It will be a celebration and a meditation on who we are, who we have been and who we hope to become. With every special gig we do, we create jobs in the creative industry. So thank you Castle Milk Stout for having faith in what we can create.”
Castle Milk Stout’s marketing manager Khwezi Vika says, “Inkunzi Emnyama and King Tha are no strangers, having partnered on a previous Castle Milk Stout campaign called Clan Beats. As a brand that prides itself on celebrating African culture and tradition, we saw it befitting to collaborate with Thandiswa Mazwai on this momentous occasion. We came across Thandiswa’s tweet seeking possible partnership, and we jumped at the opportunity of working with her again, as our brand purpose and the meaning behind Sankofa are aligned.”
