In partnership with SJ Artists, Blok has transformed the Sea Point promenade’s ablution blocks into vivid canvases, infusing the area with colorful, expressive murals that turn everyday structures into works of art.

A Collaborative Vision

SJ Artists, led by Shani Judes, is an agency devoted to managing mural artists and large-scale art projects. This collaboration with Blok showcases Shani’s expertise and passion for ocean conservation-themed public art, which aligns seamlessly with the coastal setting of Sea Point. Shani’s previous notable projects include the Wavescape Surf & Ocean Festival and Sea Walls South Africa.

Art at the Heart of City Living

Blok is dedicated to building homes that not only connect residents to their living spaces but also to their broader neighborhoods and communities. The new murals along the promenade serve as focal points, promoting themes of ocean conservation and natural beauty, while fostering environmental awareness. The project features works from three exceptional artists, each bringing a unique style to the promenade, creating a diverse visual experience that encapsulates Cape Town’s artistic spirit.

1. Russell Abrahams (Yay Abe): A Cape Town-based illustrator renowned for his colorful, playful designs. His mural, Ocean Daze, vibrantly depicts a day at the beach, featuring hidden faces for passersby to discover.
2. Amy-Leigh Braaf (Hakopike): A South African artist exploring themes of self-discovery and cultural heritage. Her mural, Coastal Lullabies, is a visual poem celebrating Cape Town’s marine life and natural beauty, drawing from her mixed Cape Malay and Indonesian heritage.
3. Mika Revell (Little Pink Pills): An Asian-American artist known for her political satire, feminism, and historical art references. Her mural, Impossible City, inspired by M.C. Escher, challenges perceptions of urban spaces and prompts viewers to reconsider conventional notions of home and community.
