Drawing inspiration from Rembrandt’s meticulous etching technique and his renowned 1639 self-portrait, the collection celebrates the intersection of age-old craftsmanship and modern innovation. Launched in collaboration with the Rembrandt House Museum, Etched Denim merges cutting-edge laser technology with G-STAR’s signature approach to denim design, creating a contemporary tribute to one of history’s most iconic artists.

Reimagining Rembrandt’s Craft in Denim

In a unique approach to Rembrandt’s artistry, G-STAR reinterprets his traditional etching method using laser technology on denim. Rembrandt was not only a revolutionary painter but also a master etcher, known for experimenting with composition and technique. Just as he explored different materials such as parchment and Japanese paper (washi), G-STAR’s design team has pushed the boundaries of denim, testing various washes and coatings to produce the collection’s intricate designs.

The collaboration marks a true blend of past and present, with subtle digital enhancements, including the use of AI, further bringing Rembrandt’s self-portrait to life on fabric. The result is an innovative capsule collection showcased at the Rembrandt House Museum, which also features highlights of Rembrandt’s printmaking and offers insights into G-STAR’s creative process.

The limited-edition, unisex capsule collection consists of six meticulously crafted pieces: two distinctive denim jackets, two jeans, a denim shirt, and a parka. Each garment features laser-etched prints inspired by one of Rembrandt’s most celebrated etchings, reimagined in denim to introduce the artist’s legacy to a modern, global audience. The intricate designs capture the texture and depth characteristic of Rembrandt’s work, bridging the worlds of fine art and fashion.
