South Africa’s new adidas away jersey blends heritage, performance, and identity

27 March 2026

On 20 March 2026, Adidas revealed the official away kits for all 25 partner federations, including 13 nations qualified for the FIFA World Cup 2026. The collection draws from each nation’s unique culture, reinterpreting classic FIFA World Cup aesthetics through a contemporary lens.

Design Rooted in Culture and 90s Football Heritage

The jerseys reinterpret iconic design elements such as geometric patterns and stylised vertical lines, merging nostalgia with modern performance. Marking its return to football’s biggest stage after 36 years, the adidas Trefoil appears on each jersey, “a defining era of football culture,” as described by Sam Handy.

“With that, these designs pay homage to each country, while offering all fans a catalogue of football designs that comfortably transcend the pitch and the stands.” Each jersey embeds subtle storytelling through references to landscapes, architecture, and cultural markers, positioning the kit as both performance wear and cultural artefact.

Performance Innovation Built for Global Conditions

The range is engineered for elite performance across varying climates. adidas integrates CLIMACOOL+ materials with body-mapped 3D engineered fabrics to enhance ventilation and moisture management. Lightweight jacquard construction supports mobility, while herringbone-stitched 3-stripes improve breathability under pressure.

A Cultural Launch in Los Angeles

To mark the global launch, adidas hosted an immersive event in Los Angeles, transforming the Lower Grand Tunnel into a street culture spectacle. The event featured performances by Kaytranada and Baby Keem, with Focalistic representing South Africa. The experience positioned football kits within a broader cultural ecosystem—where music, fashion, and sport intersect.

South Africa’s 2026/2027 Away Kit

In partnership with South African Football Association, adidas unveiled the official Away jerseys for Bafana Bafana and Banyana Banyana. The design features a bold green base with gold and white accents, colours deeply rooted in South African sporting identity.

A structured collar with refined detailing signals prestige and progression, while the colour palette symbolises resilience, growth, and ambition. The kits are designed for equal representation across both teams, reinforcing a shared commitment to advancing men’s and women’s football.

Voices Behind the Jersey

“While we honour the past generation of the 60’s to the 80s who could not represent South Africa, our partner adidas is bringing the design into the future… we are hoping for even greater performances and success,” said Lydia Monyepao. “This Away jersey reflects a timeless elegance… Every stitch reflects progression. Every detail tells a story,” added Tom Brown.

Availability and Retail Rollout

The adidas x SAFA 2026/2027 Home and Away jerseys are available from 20 March 2026 at selected retailers and online, supported by a full range of training wear in corresponding colours.
