Secret Shows Are Turning Live Music Into Discovery Again In Johannesburg
24 June 2026
Sofar Johannesburg returns on 27 June with another edition of its monthly live music series, bringing back the mystery-driven format that has become its signature. Ticket holders will not know the venue or performing artists until 36 hours before doors open, with this month’s event set to take place at a private location in Bryanston. The concept is designed to encourage discovery, allowing audiences to experience performances without preconceived expectations and creating an atmosphere where the music takes centre stage.
The Global Format Behind Emerging Talent
Founded in London in 2009, Sofar Sounds was created as an alternative to increasingly distracted live music environments. Since then, it has grown into a global platform known for intimate performances in unconventional spaces. The network has hosted early performances from artists including Billie Eilish, Hozier, Chappell Roan and Teddy Swims before they achieved mainstream recognition. In Johannesburg, Sofar has spent more than a decade adapting the model to the local creative landscape, connecting audiences with both emerging and established talent.
Investing In Johannesburg’s Creative Community
The June showcase is part of a broader programme that extends beyond music. Sofar Johannesburg also hosts a monthly poetry residency at & Friends in Braamfontein, creating space for spoken-word artists, storytellers and poets. Together, these initiatives position the organisation as more than an events platform. By creating intimate spaces for performance and discovery, Sofar continues to support Johannesburg’s creative ecosystem while helping artists find new audiences in an increasingly crowded entertainment landscape.
