R&B Veteran Jill Scott Books Pretoria and Cape Town Dates For Her New Album Tour
Eleven years is an eternity in the music industry. It is arguably even longer in R&B, a genre that has shape-shifted significantly since Jill Scott last released a full-length studio project. Yet, the announcement of her 36-date “To Whom This May Concern” world tour, which concludes with two stops in South Africa this November, suggests the Philadelphia native intends to reclaim her space on the global stage.
Partnering with Live Nation Urban, Jill’s tour will wrap up in Pretoria on November 7 and Cape Town on November 11. The shows are being billed as “residency-style performances,” placing a heavy emphasis on live band instrumentation and leaning into Jill’s reputation as a seasoned live vocalist.
The tour follows the February release of her sixth studio album, To Whom This May Concern. The project features collaborations with contemporary hip-hop figures like J.I.D., Tierra Whack, and Ab-Soul, alongside veterans like Too $hort and Trombone Shorty. While the album has received attention for its mature reflection and rejection of trend-chasing, the live transition of these new, stylistically diverse tracks alongside her early 2000s classics will be the true test of her current relevance.
Jill’s assertion that “music is a conversation” and her promise of “uniquely curated shows” set a high bar.
