From February 16th to 18th, 2024, the spotlight of the global art scene will converge upon the Cape Town International Convention Centre for the eleventh edition of the Investec Cape Town Art Fair. This edition promises to be a celebration of unbound creativity, championing emerging voices and narratives that break free from conventional bounds.
The curatorial theme for the 2024 edition is “Unbound,” a powerful exploration of emerging and diverse voices in the artistic realm. In the face of global challenges, art stands as a catalyst, offering a platform for expression and dialogue. Laura Vincenti, the Fair director, emphasized the integral role of Cape Town’s vibrant cultural hub in the Fair’s success. The city’s allure to international collectors is further bolstered by its diverse, cutting-edge art scene and favorable exchange rates. The Investec Cape Town Art Fair has solidified its position as a vital international attraction, nurturing a contemporary art ecosystem across the African continent. It serves as a bridge connecting African contemporary art to global markets, fostering interactions among galleries, artists, collectors, and institutions from diverse backgrounds.
This year, the Fair expands its reach, integrating the city of Cape Town more profoundly into its activities, elevating the visibility of local artists and engaging with an international audience. The layout of the Fair, orchestrated by Fair Director Laura Vincenti, reflects the curatorial themes, creating a seamless experience for visitors to explore the diverse showcases. Diverse curated sections await exploration at the Fair. “Tomorrows/Today,” curated by Dr. Mariella Franzoni, offers a platform for emerging artists, while “Loopholes in the Walls of Darkness,” curated by Sean O’Toole, focuses on the enduring relevance of painting in the contemporary art landscape.
New additions like “GENERATIONS,” curated by Natasha Becker and Amogelang Maledu, facilitate intergenerational conversations among artists, advocating for a future that harnesses the talents of all generations. Meanwhile, the “ALT” section challenges traditional norms by inviting non-conventional art spaces to present their interpretations.
The Fair boasts an impressive lineup of participating international galleries, bringing a rich tapestry of global art to Cape Town. Simultaneously, South African galleries, each with its unique perspective, contribute to the vibrant mosaic of artistic expression. Over 112 exhibitors from 24 countries will showcase the works of over 375 artists representing 54 nationalities, featuring more than thirty art forms. Attendees can anticipate a diverse and immersive experience, coupled with an extensive public program within and beyond the Convention Centre.
